History
The Village of Buxton was platted by Budd Reeve in 1880. Located in the southeast corner of Buxton Township-Section 25, Township 148 North, Range 51 West, it lies 12 miles west of the Red River of the North. It was founded by a group of well-to-do enthusiasts more as an idealistic scheme than a money-making enterprise.
The townsite company was headed by Thomas J. Buxton, President, and Budd Reeve, General Manager. Through a transaction with railroad executive J. J. Hill, Reeve obtained the real estate in exchange for a piece of Minneapolis property. Two sections of land for the town were bought for $6,500 and deeded to Harriet Eliza Tanner Reeve, wife of Budd. It was Harriet Reeve who decided the town should be named "BUXTON" in honor of Thomas J. Buxton, a Minneapolis businessman and family friend.
